Some constituents of Frankincense are shown to cross the blood-brain barrier and activate centers that affect mood and tissue healing. Its anti-inflammatory abilities break down mucus, making it helpful in cases of colds, flu, bronchitis, and asthma. It may similarly be used for inflammatory pain such as arthritis. In skincare, it heals wounds and scars, halts bleeding, and helps repair tissue. Its antioxidative nature lends to brilliant anti-aging qualities.
Frankincense is rich in myth and widely considered as sacred. The oil, sometimes called Olibanum (from Arabic “that which comes from milking,” due to the sap’s appearance of white droplets) is one of the three gifts presented to Mary at the birth of Jesus. It is said to have been burnt in the temple of the Ark of the Covenant. In Eastern Orthodox and Orthodox Jewish religion, its smoke is symbolic of the breath of God.
Frankincense induces deep breathing, opens lung passages, and facilitates a meditative and connected state-of-mind.
Why choose a CO2 extract over a steam distilled essential oil?
CO2-produced oils are sometimes called Supercritical Extracts. A solvent, CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), is used to extract a wider range of constituents than traditional steam-distillation—it is a longer process conducted at a lower temperature. They contain many of the same constituents as their essential oil counterparts, although they also contain some non-volatile elements otherwise not found in essential oils.
CO2-extracted Frankincense contains heavy molecules called sesquiterpenes. Sesquiterpenes are anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antimicrobial. This frankincense extract (Boswellia carterii) has anti-inflammatory and immune-enhancing activity not found in the steam-distilled oil.
Steam-distilled essential oil tends to be higher in monoterpenes, which have stronger antimicrobial and antioxidative properties. Monoterpenes are dermal penetration enhancers, which means they help pull other components of the oil deeper into the skin. You can expect this oil to be energizing, refreshing, and uplifting.
To choose between steam-distilled oil or CO2-extract, consider the application for which it is intended: for aromatic or antimicrobial purposes, steam-distillation may be preferable. For therapeutic use, consider CO2-extract, as it contains higher bioavailable “active” constituents as present in the original frankincense resin.

Essential oils are powerful plant essences that can be used in many ways. From massage oils to room sprays, to skincare to aromatherapeutic blends, these oils are as versatile as they are diverse. When using essential oils by breathing/inhaling their aromas, they are normally used at full strength. Yet when applying them directly on the skin, the large majority of them MUST be diluted. Because essential oils are so powerful, we do not recommend using them internally. Essential oils are also the basis of natural perfumery and can be used to make aromatic, bespoke blends for every individual who wishes to embark into the world of natural essences.
