A blaze of colour
Orange captures the season
And fall comes to mind…
It’s the Autumnal Equinox! We love the crisp morning air, the crunch of falling leaves, and bringing in the final embers of the summer harvest. Gift giving season is quickly approaching, which means DIY & crafting season is upon us! It’s time to stock up on our favourite essential oils. There is no colour more reflective of the blazing radiance of autumn than vibrant orange.
Orange essential oil is sweet, fresh, and fruity. A member of the Rutaceae family, it is a citrus fruit somewhere between a pomelo and a mandarin. Although citrus might make us think of distant mediterranean islands and exotic beaches, oranges don’t typically exist in the wild: it is a cultivated hybrid originating from China. It was traded by the Italians as early as the 15th century, where it then spread across the world and embraced as a favourite fruit.
Orange is a long-standing top and heart note in the perfume industry, and found particularly in both floral and woodsy concoctions. As there are many different types of orange, each possess unique olfactory characteristics: Sweet orange, blood orange, tangerine, neroli, among others, are easily found in blends, and all are lauded for their distinctively sweet, fruity, and fresh aromas.
Today, we are discussing 5-Fold Orange Essential Oil.
What are Folded Essential Oils?
Believe it or not, a “folded” essential oil is also called a “fractionated” oil, which we commonly see applied to coconut oil. What “fractionation” or “folding” means is that the oil has been distilled at a low pressure. This isolates chemical components, called terpenes, that occur naturally within the oil (1). Orange essential oils are particularly high in monoterpenes. This makes them relatively inexpensive and easy to “fold.” Some terpenes are prone to oxidation and spoilage. The process of folding removes these terpenes, which improve shelf life and impart a stronger, more resilient scent. This is great for us DIY-ers.
Think of it as orange essential oil with 5-times the potency!
Folded Oils are typically not used in therapeutic blends and aromatherapy. Instead, use 5-Fold Orange Essential Oil in DIY recipes, perfumes, and anywhere where you need a strong, long-lasting, intense orange scent.
We can use 5-Fold Orange essential oil in homemade soaps and candles: the scent will last much longer than traditional orange essential oil.
Try it in a room spray blend, such as this Fireside Chai Room Spray...
Or in a wash-off body product, such as this Wild Raspberry Body Scrub.
